The Financial Controller will play a key role in building a strong, efficient, and scalable accounting function — one that is closely aligned with operations and project teams, delivers fast and accurate reporting, improves job costing and cash flow visibility, and actively identifies opportunities for automation and process improvement.
This role reports to the VP Finance and works closely with the Accountant, Project Managers, Inventory Manager and Operations leadership, and is ideal for a hands-on controller with construction or manufacturing accounting experience.
Customer Invoicing & Revenue Recognition
· Own the end-to-end monthly customer invoicing process, including percentage-of-completion and progress invoicing.
· Establish and maintain improved revenue recognition policies with the VP Finance.
· Ensure accurate and compliant sales tax treatment on all invoices.
· Review monthly invoicing with Project Managers as required.
· Ensure customer invoicing is aligned between all systems (Accounting and MRP).
· Track and manage project holdbacks and invoicing documents.
Job Costing & Project Financials
· Establish disciplined processes for monthly job costing review and reconciliation (between Accounting and MRP systems)
· Drive Project Manager ownership and accountability for job costing accuracy.
· Establish project-level KPIs beyond job costing.
· Work with Inventory Manager to ensure accurate material consumption.
· Attend weekly workload meetings to exchange operational, production, and financial information.
· Complete Innergy project close-out steps and support ongoing project maintenance admin requirements.
Month-End Close & Financial Reporting
· Prepare monthly Work in Progress (WIP) calculations and related journal entries.
· Align MRP month-end close with Accounting system month-end close.
· Prepare the monthly financial report package including variance analysis, supporting schedules and commentary on the monthly and quarterly results.
· Review bank reconciliations and GL regularly, correcting errors prior to financial report distribution.
Inventory, Fixed Assets & Systems
· Review inventory counts quarterly and post required adjustments.
· Working closely with the Inventory Manager align Accounting systems inventory with MRP inventory on a monthly basis.
· Establish and maintain a fixed asset subledger in Sage, including asset-level depreciation tracking.
· Perform Innergy system maintenance and support accounting system alignment.
Budgeting & Planning
· Prepare the annual budget based on guidance from the VP Finance and Operational leadership.
· Provide budget assumptions and inputs to managers.
· Prepare monthly financial reporting comparing actual results to budget.
· Identify and execute on cost savings opportunities and provide early reporting on costs versus budget.
Automation & Continuous Improvement
· Lead accounting automation initiatives to reduce manual effort and improve accuracy.
· Identify and implement process improvements to accelerate month-end close.
· Document and standardize accounting processes to improve redundancy and scalability.
External Accounting & Reporting
· Act as primary point of contact with external accountants during year-end.
· Prepare and maintain year-end working papers.
· Primary point of contact for any financial audits (CRA, WCB, PST etc.).
· Complete annual financial industry surveys and Statistics Canada surveys.
· Act as back-up for the Accountant as required.
· CPA designation (required).
· Experience in construction and/or manufacturing accounting are preferred.
· Experience with Sage and Innergy systems are preferred.
· Extremely detail oriented with a consistently high standard for accuracy and completeness.
· Strong understanding of job costing, WIP, revenue recognition, and progress billing.
· Proven experience owning month-end close and financial reporting.
· Systems-oriented mindset with experience leading automation initiatives.
· Strong communicator who works effectively with operations and project teams (highest level of English proficiency).
