Job Description

The Union Steamship Marina is looking for a Carpentry Supervisor to support marina infrastructure, inlcuding marina maintenance and emergency repairs.

Position Title: Lead Carpenter & Marina Maintenance Supervisor
NOC: 72014 – Contractors and Supervisors, Carpentry Trades
Employer: Union Steamship Co. Marina, Bowen Island, BC
Wage: $70,720 per year, paid bi‐monthly by direct deposit
Vacation: 10 paid working days per year

Duties & Responsibilities
● Lead and supervise carpentry work related to marina infrastructure, including docks,
floats, ramps, gangways, timber structures, and building components.
● Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and project specifications to plan carpentry
tasks and determine materials, tools, and construction methods.
● Estimate labour requirements, material quantities, and project timelines; prepare
material lists and coordinate procurement.
● Assign carpentry tasks to crew members, provide hands‐on guidance, and ensure
work meets structural, safety, and quality standards.
● Oversee construction, installation, repair, and replacement of wooden and composite
components used in marine environments.
● Train apprentices and junior carpenters in carpentry techniques, safe tool operation,
maintenance procedures, and workplace safety.
● Inspect completed carpentry work and ongoing projects to ensure accuracy,
structural integrity, and compliance with building codes and safety regulations.
● Coordinate with external contractors and trades for specialized work, ensuring
integration with carpentry‐related tasks.
● Enforce Health & Safety procedures, conduct toolbox talks, and ensure proper use of
PPE and tools.
● Support broader marina maintenance activities when carpentry expertise is required,
including emergency repairs and infrastructure upkeep.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

Formal or applied training in carpentry, with demonstrated experience in the construction, repair, and replacement of structural wood and composite components in marine or heavy-use environments.
Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and project specifications to plan and execute carpentry tasks independently.
Supervisory or team-lead experience in a carpentry or trades setting, including scheduling, task delegation, material estimation, and on-the-job mentorship of junior staff or apprentices.
Familiarity with building codes, structural safety standards, and the application of those standards to dock, float, gangway, and ramp construction or repair.
Experience with welding and metal fabrication, particularly MIG or stick welding applied to steel marine structures such as ramps, gangways, dock moorings, and anchor hardware.

The following would be considered a strong asset:

Multi-trade capability across at least two of the following: plumbing, low-voltage and standard electrical systems (12V to 220V), or metal work; marina maintenance environments rarely present single-trade work orders.
Prior experience maintaining or repairing infrastructure in coastal, marine, or remote facility settings, including exposure to corrosion management and weather-driven maintenance demands.
Experience operating and maintaining heavy or light machinery used in marina or construction contexts.
Demonstrated ability to manage materials procurement, project costing, or coordination with external contractors and specialized trades.
Valid First Aid certification or willingness to obtain prior to start.
