Job Description

This position works in the Lands and Facilities organizational unit. This is skilled shop and field work at the journeyperson level performing the inspection, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and related systems in various municipal buildings. An incumbent carries out a variety of maintenance tasks, identifies malfunctions and repair requirements, troubleshoots equipment, performs repair work, and identifies the need for more extensive repairs. An incumbent also coordinates and monitors repairs performed by contractors and develops and coordinates preventive maintenance programs. An incumbent exercises considerable independent judgement and action in determining the cause of issues, after receiving oral instructions or a written work order setting forth a complaint in general terms. A supervisor reviews work performance in terms of effective trades work, conformance with established standards, and the attainment of desired objectives. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by technical courses related to the work, and completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a refrigeration mechanic, plus considerable related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. The successful candidate will have thorough knowledge of standard work methods, practices, tools and equipment used in the trade, along with considerable knowledge of the principles, functions and operations of HVAC equipment. They will be able to diagnose equipment breakdowns, identify potential issues, and maintain and repair HVAC equipment and related systems. The role requires the ability to coordinate and monitor contractor work, develop and maintain preventive maintenance programs, and monitor and adjust automated control systems. The candidate must be able to read sketches, blueprints, diagrams and specifications; maintain a variety of records; follow oral and written instructions; and perform duties with minimal supervision. Skill in the care and use of tools and testing equipment is also required. A BC Certificate of Qualification (Refrigeration Mechanic), BC Gas Fitter Certificate, and Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia are required.
